BOOK REVIEW: Only She Can Help Us! Evil Forces are
Driving the World toward War: James Hanisch
(Good Counsel Publications associated with the Fatima Consecration Crusade)
By Paul Lavin, Ph.D
This small, one hundred twenty page book authored by James Hanisch is another easy to read, facts packed, scholarly gem produced by Father Nicholas Gruner’s Fatima Center. My first thought upon scanning through its contents was the quote made by Senator Hiram Johnson in 1917: “The first casualty of war is truth.” Much to my surprise, Mr. Hanisch cited this quote on page 58 (footnote 120) in reference to Phillip Knightly’s book entitled The First Casualty: The War Correspondent As Hero, Propagandist, and Myth Maker. Hanisch describes Knightly’s work as being a “masterly” source, identifying those diabolical manipulations used by governmental agencies to destroy their adversaries.
Mr. Hanisch’s book is about truth and how those in power manipulate and distort the facts to justify the never ending, unholy wars that plague every generation. The clever manipulation of the spoken and written word, the suppression of information, and bold face lying in order to stoke up “war fever” are clearly presented and well-documented. Hanisch particularly focuses on the recent Malaysian passenger plane that was shot down on July 17, 2014, murdering all two hundred ninety eight civilians on board. The staging of this incident and how it was used to create and accelerate conflict between the NATO powers, Russia, and the Ukraine is described in detail, along with our own government’s involvement in this cloak and dagger operation. Other recent saber-rattling fabrications such as the claim that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction; the erroneous contention that Syria’s President Assad gassed a Syrian village; and the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia for the contrived massacre in Kosovo, are analyzed and discussed in detail.
Hanisch not only focuses on current events of government deception and mendacity leading to war, but he points out that this has been an ongoing pattern throughout the course of human history. He cites examples going back to the War with Mexico in 1846; the mysterious sinking of the battleship Maine, leading to the Spanish American War in 1898; the hidden secrets surrounding the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor; Operation Northwoods, which was designed to promote a war with Cuba; and the fictitious Gulf of Tonkin incident, leading to our involvement in Vietnam and the death of more than 55,000 of our men.
Although Hanisch mainly focuses on U.S. historical events, he points out that no one government has a monopoly on war mongering. For example, a description of the “The Gleiwitz Incident” and how Nazi Germany manufactured and used this as an excuse to invade Poland is presented. This detailed account is most striking (no pun intended) in documenting how the evils of “perception management” can be put into practice. “The Gleiwitz Incident” is a classic example, clearly pointing out that “conspiracy theory” is not the fabricated nonsense that some would like to believe it to be. Rather, real life, evil conspirators do exist, and they are both clever and ruthless, using any means necessary to achieve their goals.
It should be noted that James Hanisch presents himself as a true patriot who sincerely takes no pleasure in pointing out those “black marks” tarnishing the history of our nation. However, in order to survive and prosper, he stresses that it is essential that we give our highest priority to honestly acknowledging these “black marks,” repent, and make reparation for them. Hanisch goes on by citing the Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln designating a National Fast Day (1863) to make restitution for what Lincoln called “our national sins” as an example on how such a task might be undertaken.
For me, this Proclamation, with which I was not familiar, was the highlight of Part 1 of Hanisch’s book. Being surrounded and plummeted by the evils of the past and present can leave one with feelings of discouragement and hopelessness in our world, which has seemingly gone mad. But lo and behold what appears in the midst of this black hole is a beacon of light – President Lincoln’s “Proclamation Appointing a National Fast Day on April 30, 1863.” This inspiring and uplifting Proclamation reminds us that there are (or at least, were) principled politicians who will put truth first and do what is right for our nation. This document, which is well worth reading in its entirety, is as follows:
“By the President of the United States of America. A Proclamation
“Whereas, the Senate of the United States, devoutly recognizing the Supreme Authority and just Government of Almighty God, in all the affairs of men and nations, has, by a resolution, requested the President to designate and set apart a day for National Prayer and humiliation.
“And whereas it is the duty of nations as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.
“And insomuch as we know that, by His divine law, nations like individuals are subjected to punishments and chastisements in this world, may not justly fear the awful calamity of civil war, which now desolates the land, may be but a punishment, inflicted upon us, for the presumptuous sins, to the needful end of our national reformation in a whole people? We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us!
“It behooves us then, to humble ourselves before the offended Power to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.
“Now, therefore, in compliance with the request, and fully concurring in the views of the Senate, I do, by this proclamation, designate and set apart Thursday, the 30th day of April, 1863, as a day of national humiliation, fasting, and prayer. And I do hereby request all the People to abstain, on that day, from their ordinary secular pursuits, and to unite, at their several places of public worship and their respective homes, in keeping the day holy to the Lord, and devoted to the humble discharge of the religious duties proper to this solemn occasion.
“All this being done, in sincerity and truth, let us then rest humbly in the hope authorized by the Divine teachings, that the united cry of the Nation will be heard on high, and answered with blessings, no less than the pardon of our national sins, and the restoration, and the restoration of our now divided and suffering Country, to its former happy condition of unity and peace.
“In witnessed whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.
“Done at the city of Washington, this thirtieth day of March, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty three, and of the Independence of the United States the eighty seventh.
“By the President: Abraham Lincoln”
How different the moral climate has become since Lincoln issued this Proclamation. Abortion is now the law of the land; same sex marriage is “legalized” in many states; cohabitation is commonplace; and God and His commandments have been exited from the courts, our schools, and throughout our increasingly more secular society. Our “national sins” have become more than plentiful. Can anyone imagine any of our recent Presidents initiating and pronouncing such a proclamation as Lincoln did in 1863? Can anyone imagine Barack Obama, George W. Bush, or William Jefferson Clinton declaring a National Fast Day, begging our Lord to forgive us for our “national sins” of presumption, arrogance, and the willfully blatant violation of His laws? The answer to these questions is obvious to those who take our Lord and His teachings seriously. The secularists would simply dismiss such questions as being frivolous and irrelevant. The existence of “national sins” and seeking God’s forgiveness for them would be considered as silly, archaic, and out of touch with our much more enlightened modern times.
While Hanisch focuses on the reckless lies, transparent propaganda, and other dirty tricks used to stoke up “war fever,” he spends several pages discussing the “Bush Doctrine” and how this has significantly increased the threat of a nuclear holocaust. The Bush Doctrine, announced in 2002, has given the President the authority to strike first and to use nuclear weapons against any nation that is viewed as being potentially dangerous to the American people or our national interest. In other words, if a nation is perceived as a hostile threat, the military could be instructed to initiate a nuclear first strike, the purpose of which would be to literally destroy those that are perceived as being the enemy and thereby totally eliminate their capacity to retaliate.
Prior to the issuing of the “Bush Doctrine,“ striking first was not considered to be acceptable, even if another country was viewed as being potentially dangerous. The only justification for attacking any nation would be if that nation attacked first. Moreover, the view that nuclear weapons should only be used for defensive not offensive purposes has prevailed. This has kept the use of such weaponry in check for the last sixty plus years. However, with the advent of the “Bush Doctrine,” these checks no longer remain. Not only could preemptive strikes be permitted, but the full use of nuclear firepower could be authorized as well. These changes can only add to the current volatility surrounding us. Justifying when and where a preemptive strike is warranted becomes ambiguous, uncertain, and anxiety provoking. Such pressure can lead to hyper-vigilance, emotional over-reaction, misperception, and clouded judgment. The creation of such a political climate can only exacerbate an already potentially dangerous situation. This could quickly accelerate into the unleashing of nuclear weaponry truly leading to “mass destruction.”
Hanisch continues by stressing that there are no winners once nuclear weapons are unleashed. He cites the work of Steven Starr who contends that “Theories of ‘limited nuclear war’ and ’nuclear de-escalation’ are unrealistic.” To believe otherwise is what Hanisch calls “Human Delusions.” Detail accounts on the horrific effects of nuclear destruction on planet earth and the people who inhabit it are discussed. There is an old saying that “A picture is worth a thousand words.” On page 47, a colored photograph of the body of a scorched child is a vivid reminder of how awful radiation burns can be.
With the completion of Part 1, Hanisch goes on to discuss in detail “The One and Only Solution” to avoiding nuclear war and establishing world peace. This One and Only Solution began when Our Lady first appeared to Sister Lucy, Jacinta, and Francisco, the three seers of Fatima in 1917. It was at this time that Our Lady first announced, “God wills to establish in the world the devotion to My Immaculate Heart.” Twelve years later on July 13, 1929, Our Lady revealed to Sister Lucy that Christ the King commanded that the Consecration of Russia, by the Pope in unison with all the bishops of the world, would be the means to bring this about. Our Lord promised that Russia would be converted and peace would follow. If the Pope and the bishops failed to honor His command, however, dire punishments, leading to much suffering and the annihilation of nations would be inflicted upon the world. Our Lady also revealed that there would be no other alternative for avoiding future wars. She emphatically stated, “without this consecration Russia cannot be converted, nor can the world have peace.”
Nearly one hundred years have passed since Our Lady first appeared in Fatima. Eighty five years have passed since Our Lord commanded the immediate Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of His Mother. Despite repeated warnings, the Message of Fatima continues to be ignored. Hanisch documents the nefarious tactics that have been used by the Church hierarchy in order to prevent Our Lord’s simple request from ever taking place. Hiram Johnson's quote, “The first casualty of war is truth” certainly applies in our ongoing battle with the Prince of Darkness and those “useful idiots” who follow him.
Hanisch concludes his book by pointing out that World War lll could be just around the corner, if we continue to conduct business as usual. Like the King of France, who ignored our Lord’s request to consecrate His Sacred Heart to France, our world could soon come to a sad end. King Louis XVI was publically executed by his own subjects one hundred years to the day when Our Lord, through Sister Margaret Alacoque, first requested that France be consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We have just turned the corner on the New Year, 2015. Nearly one century has passed since Our Lady appeared in Fatima, warning us of impending disaster. The year 2017 is only a few short years away. Could the same fate fall on our nation? Or have we become so steeped in corruption that we are now too dulled to heed Our Lady’s warning? Time will soon tell.
Lastly, Mr. Hanisch has dedicated his well-written and documented book to “all men of goodwill who are willing to defend, embrace, and promote the truth of Our Lady of Fatima’s Message.” He especially dedicates his work to those whom he refers to as “brave souls”– those who are not only willing to call a spade a spade, but to work diligently to fulfill Her requests. As Mr. Hanisch’s book title emphatically states, “Only She (Our Blessed Mother) can help us!”
